The Hey Jude progression is I – bVII – IV, which is prominently featured at the end of the well-known Beatles song of 1968. bVII can also be conceived as IV/IV, as observed by my grad school professor Evan Copley. The progression evokes Mixolydian mode and creates a sense of tonal tension between I and IV. It is often associated with the ethos of the hippie movement in the 1960s.
