L’Adonai Ha-Aretz

Demo, Notes, and Score

Notes

“L’Adonai Ha-Aretz” is Hebrew for “The Earth is the Lord’s”—the opening phrase of Psalm 24:1, which reads in full: “The Earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” In 2009 I was inspired to set this verse to music in its original language. I intended this project for my doctoral dissertation, but later set it aside and pursued another direction. “L’Adonai Ha-Aretz” now stands as an independent choral piece. In this setting, the text repeats freely as the music develops. Later, a new verse is presented, Numbers 14:21, which translates, “The whole earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord.” This and Psalm 24:1 complement each other thematically. I see this piece as a meditation on the words and what they embody: a vision of hope and peace in a world designed to reflect the glory and love of the Creator to its fullest.
